It seems as though we should be able to go to our primary care physician or OBGYN and ask about our sexual health. Unfortunately, many doctors do not have advanced training in sexual health.

Rebekah Rollston reports in, The Sad State of Sexual Health Education in Physician Training, January 12, 2018, “The average medical school student, over the course of 4 years, receives just 3-10 hours of sexual health education.”

Scott Kober also reported “Female sexual health education, while identified as a priority by many ob-gyn residency directors, remains a work in progress at many academic institutions throughout the United States.1 Previous surveys have shown that recent medical school graduates and residents feel ill-equipped to manage patients with specific sexual health issues such as sexual dysfunction and arousal issues.” in July 1, 2021article, Sexual health education of ob-gyn resident physicians: How are we doing?

Because sex and sexual issues are a taboo topic in our society we may feel more comfortable talking to a doctor we already know, like, and trust. If that doctor has advanced training in sexual health and/or menopause we are in luck. If not, we might feel our concerns are dismissed.

The good news is there are doctors in our area that do specialize in sexual health and/or menopause.

You might also need or want to seek someone who has advanced training in menopause specifically. The Menopause Society provides a directory to find a menopause provider in your area.

It can be difficult to be our own advocate but you and your sexual health are worth it. If you are considering sex therapy it is often helpful to have a check up with a medical doctor to rule out any physiological concerns or begin treatment if necessary.
